All introverts’ nightmare: networking!
Why is it so difficult for us, introverts, to enjoy networking and small talks?
- Social anxiety: It’s challenging for us to engage in small talk, approach strangers or participate in large social gatherings.
- Energy expenditure: we typically recharge our energy by spending time alone or in small, intimate settings.
=> Networking events, which often involve large crowds and constant interaction, are draining and require us to expend more energy than we might prefer.
- Sensitivity to stimulation: we are often more sensitive to environmental stimuli, such as noise and crowded spaces
=> networking events turn to be overwhelming or uncomfortable for us.
- Misperception of shyness: we can be perceived as shy or uninterested in socializing.
=> People would avoid us or not give us the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations.
- Preference for deep conversations: we typically enjoy deeper, more meaningful conversations, whereas networking events often focus on superficial interactions.
=> This mismatch can make networking feel unfulfilling or unenjoyable for us.
We, introverts, need to approach networking differently, focusing on quality over quantity, and finding strategies and tactics to enjoy the event and more importantly, make the best of it for our businesses.
